  10.     ========================  WHAT IS JOBS?  ========================
  11.  
  12. JOBS is an acronym for JOB Organization and Backup System.  It is a
  13. hard disk manager, DOS shell, utility set, menu manager, and more.  It
  14. runs on IBM PC/XT/AT and compatible computers.
  15.  
  16. Perhaps our most difficult task has been to explain what JOBS is.  It
  17. doesn't fall neatly into a single category.  Maybe it is best described
  18. as a housekeeper.
  19.  
  20. As a housekeeper, JOBS performs those tasks that are performed outside of
  21. application programs.  We consider PCs to be machines specifically
  22. designed to run applications, ie., word processing, accounting, planning,
  23. drafting, design, etc.  Housekeeping tasks are those that are necessary
  24. but incidental.  Housekeeping tasks include:

  26.   1. DOS related operations, such as directory creation/removal,
  27.      file copy, erase, rename, etc.
  28.  
  29.   2. Execution of application programs.
  30.  
  31.   3. Installation and removal of programs and utilities.
  32.  
  33.   4. Backup or archiving of data created by applications.
  34.  
  35.   5. Miscellaneous functions to display, organize, and manage
  36.      application data; ie., tools used to print, search, sort,
  37.      compare, etc.

  39.   6. The ability to automate or customize frequently performed
  40.      operations.

  44. The shareware version of JOBS (JOBS-SW) is a subset of JOBS+, which adds
  45. support for hard disk backup and restore, a menu manager, EASY menus to
  46. simplify access to JOBS' extensive command set, and a set of macros that
  47. make short work of many of the most common housekeeping tasks.
